SUMMARY:Susan G Komen® "In My Own Voice" Event for African-American Women
DESCRIPTION:African-American women are often diagnosed younger\, at later stages and with more aggressive breast cancers when the prognosis is poor\, which contributes to nearly 40% higher death rates than white women.  These disparities are especially salient as it relates to metastatic breast cancer (MBC); African-American women living with MBC face unique challenges associated with this disease. Despite these facts\, African-American women are often underrepresented in the conversation on the unique needs\, priorities and barriers to equitable treatment of women living with MBC. \nTo address this gap\, the In My Own Voice (IMOV) event for African-American women living with MBC in Los Angeles\, California. This intimate gathering will share information about the latest advances in scientific research and clinical treatment specific to MBC with participants and engage participants in conversations to gain insight into their unique needs\, barriers they face\, and possible solutions to inform Komen’s efforts to address disparities in racial and ethnic breast cancer outcomes. Participants will have an opportunity to meet and network with other African-American women living with MBC. Priority will be given to those who reside in California.

SUMMARY:Young Researchers Roundtable Breakfast: Hearing the Metastatic Voice
DESCRIPTION:This event connects early-career breast cancer researchers with established local Komen Scholars\, physicians\, scientists\, individuals living with metastatic breast cancer\, breast cancer survivors\, and co-survivors. \nThe program will consist of presentations by individuals vested in metastatic breast cancer research and treatment. After the presentations\, young researchers will provide brief overviews of their breast cancer research projects. Following the researcher overviews\, there will be table discussions about breast cancer research and treatment and its impact on patient care with a focus on the care of those living with metastatic breast cancer. New this year\, we will host a Soda Float Social following the event to allow time for interested participants to connect and network beyond their tables. Our goal is to move closer to finding the cures to breast cancer by encouraging open dialogue while developing a passionate\, informed\, and supportive community in the Triangle.

SUMMARY:Keeping Cancer at Bay: What Researchers Are Learning About Recurrence
DESCRIPTION:After you finish chemotherapy and other full-body treatments\, what happens next? This can be a stressful time\, when many people worry about the possibility of recurrence\, or a return of breast cancer. \nDuring this program\, our panelists will share what we know about why breast cancer recurs\, which tests doctors use to monitor you for recurrence and what you can do if you are at a high risk for recurrence – including exploring clinical trials and changes you can make in your everyday life to support your good health. \nHear from our expert\, Dr. DeMichele of the Abramson Cancer Center\, who is designing clinical trials on recurrence\, as well as people with early-stage breast cancer who have taken part in research studies. This program is the first in a series on recurrence; the second program will be offered as a webinar in December on managing fears of recurrence.
